There is often a requirement to evaluate descriptive statistics for data within an organization or for health care information. Every year, the National Cancer Institute collects and publishes data updates of rates for new cases and deaths as well as trends for the most common cancers in the United States. Understanding differences between the groups based upon the collected data often informs health care professionals about trends in cancer diagnosis and mortality.
Using the data on the "National Cancer Data Trends" Excel spreadsheet, calculate the descriptive statistics indicated below for each of the three cancer types listed. You can choose either "Rates of New Cases" or "Death Rate." Refer to your textbook and the Topic 5 Resources, as needed, for assistance with creating Excel formulas.
Provide the following descriptive statistics:
- Measures of central tendency: mean, median, and mode.
- Measures of variation: variance, standard deviation, and range (a formula is not needed for range).
- Once the data are calculated, provide a 150-250-word analysis of the descriptive statistics on the spreadsheet. This should include differences between groups and trends shown in the data. Be sure to include Excel formulas used to calculate data and graph to identify trends in the data set.
- Describe the x-axis (independent variable) and y-axis (dependent variable). Describe the trends that you observe in the graph.
- Explain how data entered on one patient impact public and population health data, such as the "National Cancer Data Trends" you analyzed for this assignment.
